About the Design
The Huntington Desert Garden in San Marino, California, hosts over 5,000 species of succulents and desert plants. While the Yucca filifera reaches 60 feet in the lower garden, the upper section protects 3,000 delicate succulents inside a greenhouse. The Queen of the Night cactus weighs 20 tons and is a major highlight.
In 1907, William Hertrich proposed the garden to Henry Huntington. Huntington then built railways and imported rocks, soil, and plants from across North, Central, and South America. This effort created one of the largest and most extraordinary desert gardens worldwide. For example, Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx called it “the most extraordinary garden in the world.”
